Advantage of Viton® Gaskets
Viton® gaskets are made of high-performance fluoroelastomers that provide outstanding resistance to heat. These rubber gaskets generally support temperatures from 15° F to 400° F and are suitable for applications that reach 500° F intermittently. Gaskets made of Viton® also provide excellent resistance to:
- oils
- alkalis
- concentrated bases
- most mineral acids
- sun, weather, and oxidation
- mold and fungus
Importantly, gaskets made of Viton® provide good resistance to compression set, even at high temperatures over extended periods of time. Gaskets made of this DuPont elastomer also have good electrical properties for low-voltage, low-frequency applications.
Additional advantages of Viton® for elastomeric gaskets include:
- good abrasion and tear resistance
- excellent solvent and oil resistance
- low burning characteristics
Types of Viton® for Die Cut Gaskets
Interstate die cuts rubber gaskets made of premium, commercial, and FDA grades of Viton®. Fluorine percentages vary and range from 66% to 70%. Lettered designations (A, B, F) indicate the fluorine content and, in turn, the elastomer’s relative resistance to fluid and chemical attack. Grades with higher amounts of fluorine have greater resistance to these attacks, but offer less low-temperature flexibility.
Applications for Viton® Gaskets
With its fuel resistance and low burning characteristics, Viton® was used originally in the aerospace industry. Today, Viton® gaskets are used in automotive, fluid power, appliance, and chemical applications. The introduction of FDA grades of Viton® have extended the use of this fluoroelastomer to the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
Gaskets made of Viton® are recommended for harsh, high-temperature environments. They are often used with lubricating and fuel oils, hydraulic oil, gasoline, kerosene, vegetable oils, alcohols, and diluted acids. Sealing applications include heat and intake manifold gaskets, siphon and fuel hoses, and quick-connect O-rings. Viton® gaskets are also used as fuel seals, T-seals, cap seals, and radial lip seals in pumps.
